Economy: Jersey gets new bank notes

Monday, December 28th 2009

A complete new set of Jersey banknotes will enter general circulation in February, the treasury minister has revealed. Senator Philip Ozouf has also announced that next year will see the introduction of a £100 note. However, his department is remaining tight-lipped about what will feature on all but two of the notes.

Ozouf revealed that the new notes, which will feature new security measures, would have the value printed in both French and Jčrriais on one side. He also said that the £1 note would feature the Liberation Statue in Liberation Square in St Helier on the front and La Hougue Bie on the back.

He said that the £100 note would be in general circulation in 2010, but would be launched after the other redesigned notes in February. The design is still under consideration.

He added that it was usual for notes to be updated every ten or 12 years, but that the Jersey notes had not been changed for 18 years.
